European Hydrogen Academy Research Intern
Shakil is a sustainability minded researcher currently undertaking a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Birmingham, he joined Bertz Associates as a research intern for the Hydrogen Academy project in June 2025.
He graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2023 with a first class bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, and from the University of Birmingham in 2024 with a Masters in Advanced Mechanical Engineering. Both his undergraduate and masters dissertation projects centered on the use of green hydrogen in vehicular applications, and his current research seeks to reduce the impact and carbon emissions of internal combustion engines by using alternative fuels such as hydrogen.
He is keen to increase awareness of this fuel and work towards achieving the net zero agenda.
Outside of work and academics, Shakil is a nationally ranked swimmer and represents the University of Birmingham at competitions across the UK.
